Tuition 4 Interlochen Arts Academy

Donation protected

My son Jared has been accepted to Interlochen Fine Arts Boarding School where he could start as a freshman this fall to study the trumpet. In order to make his dream a reality we need to raise money. The tuition plus fees is over $60,000 a year. We need to make a committent to the school by June 2, 2016, so we need to raise as much money as we can prior to that date.

Jared began playing the trumpet in January of 2013 in the school band. He became serious about the trumpet in the fall of 2014 after he turned to music as a way of coping with life's tragedies. He had to deal with many stressors over a short period of time, starting with my cancer diagnosis when he was 8. He was truly pushed to his limits when his grandmother, who had lived with us, died in the fall of 2014. Jared found himself in a very dark place, having lost a loved one and worrying that I would be next. I am so thankful for his music and the many people who helped us get Jared through those times.

In terms of his talent/ability other musicians have used the phrases "trumpet prodigy" and "...has boat loads of talent...". I would agree, but then I am his mother! We have struggled to fulfill his musical needs as we live in a VERY rural area and drive 2 hours one way for Jared to receive trumpet lessons. When we visited Interlochen, Jared was in awe the entire day and ended the day by looking at Tim and I saying, "I was meant to be here!"

Due to my ongoing health issues, I have not been able to work in a full-time capacity for several years and have been off work since October 2015. My husband and I want so desperately to make our son's dreams come true and ask that you consider helping us support his goals. Any donations would be used to pay his tuition. We would be eternally grateful for  any donations that we received.

Below is a copy of the essay that Jared wrote for his Interlochen application. He wrote and posted this on his own...I didn't know how well he could write!! I think he has been holding out on me! As you can tell by reading it, he is very passionate about music. He plans to be a professional trumpet player and hopes to attend a college such as Julliard.

Thank you for your consideration and hope you enjoy Jared's performance of Carnival of Venice played at the age of 13 at state Solo and Ensemble, which earned him a first.

Jared applications essay for Interlochen:

Brass Day is an annual event held at UWSP in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Brass Day is an event in which high school and middle school brass players from all across Wisconsin may attend. While at this event, students will receive a master class from the professor of which instrument they play. Throughout the day, there will be various ensembles preforming for the students. Every participant in Brass Day also plays a concert in a brass ensemble at the end of the day. Rehearsals are held throughout the day, working on music at a high school level. Brass Day can make each student who attends a better musician. That was the case for me. Brass Day changed my life in a way so crucial; it will never be the same.

The first time I attended Brass Day was during the fall of 2014. I was in 7th grade at the time, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue to play the trumpet throughout high school or not. I was seriously thinking about just simply quitting with the trumpet. That was until I had my first trumpet master class. My first master class was with Professor Brent Turney of Stevens Point. I didn’t know it then, but he would later be a very important person in my life.
Brass Day was the first time that I got to play in an ensemble with more than 25 people. Right away, from the first notes that we played, I knew that I wanted to be a trumpet player. It felt so good to create something; it was the first time I have ever experienced anything like that in my life. The way the sound boomed around me and filled up the room was nothing short of godly. The thing is, it didn’t only feel good to create something so beautiful, but to this day, I have never done something that was as fun as playing in an experienced ensemble. I think that no musician should give up on their instrument until they have had the experience of playing in an orchestra, or a brass ensemble, or a big band, or kind of ensemble that has talented players.

Brass Day was such an amazing experience for me. Not only did I discover what I wanted to do in life, but I got to play next to students of UWSP. To this day, even with the great opportunities that I have had, I still think that Brass Day was the most beneficial. I have had some amazing experiences, some of them much more fun than Brass Day, but Brass Day is where I discovered who I am. I wouldn’t be taking lessons from Professor Brent Turney if it weren’t for Brass Day. I wouldn’t be playing the trumpet still today if it weren’t for Brass Day. I wouldn’t be this happy in life… if it weren’t for Brass Day.
