George (The Dog Who Lived)

Donation protected
It was a cold dark night on an abandon stretch of road when my girlfriend and I first met George.   Half a mile from a new by construction site trying to drag himself out of the way of our car and a big rig.

We didn't know what was wrong at first be we could soon tell.  His tail was broken and mangled.  What's more he had no back legs.   We got out of the car and I picked him up.  Their was no way we could just leave him there.

We didn't know what to do or where to take him. It was 11:00pm at night.  We had just been exploring.  It was mere accident of fate that we met George that night.  We went to the store and bought him dog food.  His back bones and ribs were sticking out.

We took him home and washed away the grime and filth.  To our horror we saw 2 bones sticking out from either end of the middle of his tail, and the skin nearly completely gone from his underside.  I cleaned and wrapped the tail as best I could.

We took him to the vets the next day.  He was too sick to get his tail removed. He needed antibiotics and there were a whole slew of issues that made surgery impossible.  Not to mention the cost.

They told us something else... George's legs had not been amputated as we thought.  They seemed to be hacked off.  The 76 year old vet we took him to said he had never seen anything like it in his entire career.

We could have had George put to sleep or given him to the humane society which would have done the same.  Ended a life filled with suffering with the cold prick of needle.  But George made it this far.

George was a fighter.  With the life he had he learned to be.  Not one time did he whimper in pain.  Not one time did he bark or try to bite.  No, George loves life.  He loves food and staring down my cat in an adorable way.  He tries to get up and come to me every time I enter the room and loves being petted.

He is currently recovering from Pneumonia, an enlarged heart, a distended bladder, and infections from his wounds. His blood work is more complicated than we're able to understand.   So far the vet bills were over $1,000.  When he's ready for surgeries they will likely cost much much more.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.  With your help I know George will be able to run again one day with a little doggy wheel chair.  Who knows he might even scare my cat with some luck.  The one thing I do know is George is a survivor.  He deserves all the love and care we can give.
