Maddie's Recovery

Don protégé
On January 14th, 2016 Justin Poirier's wife and children were in a horrible high speed accident in Livingston, Texas, Dawn and Maddie were both thrown from the vehicle during the crash while Leighton was trapped inside. Dawn passed away at the scene due to the severity of her injuries, Maddie and Leighton were both flown to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Leighton suffered a broken right leg, broken femur, broken left arm, broken collar bone, and remained in casts for three months.

Maddie suffered two broken legs, a shattered pelvis, bruised lungs, leaving her unable to breathe on her own, and many other serious injuries.  Maddie was finally transfered to Shriners hospital in Chicago at the end of April, after over 3 months in the Intensive Care Unit at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Texas. It took nearly 3 months to get little Maddie off of a ventilator and breathing on her own.

Maddie sustained severe injuries from the crash, which left her paralyzed, with the ability to move her arms. We do not know exactly what the future holds in store for Maddie, but we all remain positive and have faith that God will guide her in whichever way her journey leads her. Reguardless of the tough times she has endured over the past few months, she has kept such a beautiful smile on her face, giving everyone around her hope.

We are all pulling together and would appreciate any help we can get to make the much needed moifications to create an environment where Leighton and Maddie can both thrive and continue to heal.

This has been so hard on everyone in our family, Justin has been by Maddie's side since day one which obviously means he has not been able to work. Justin's parents, Christine and Micheal welcomed Leighton into their home with open arms and have made the best accomodations for him thus far. Maddie and Justin are heading to Washinton to move back home with Justin's parents on June 20th when Maddie is finally released from the hospital.

This move will provide a much needed family support system to help them through this next phase of their lives. Obviously with Maddie's inability to walk on her own, this means many changes will have to happen in their home to make it wheelchair accessible for her. They are going to be adding in a Ceiling Track System to help Maddie use the toilet, get into bed, and bathe. They will also need to put in a stair lift to get her around the house, and make arrangements to get her a hospital bed. These are just a few of the things they will need to do to make Maddie feel at home, and comfortable. As you can imagine, these changes are going to be extremely expensive.

Without these modifications, Maddie's ability to do anything at all for herself would be nearly impossible. There is so much stress and tension involved with making sure she has a place to come home to that is accomodating for her, and we need your help to get this done. Since Justin is a 100% disabled veteran, Micheal contacted the Greater Tri-Cities Veterans Coordination Group (VFW/American Legion), who have agreed to help every step of the way. One month is not a lot of time to complete all of these projects, and it is going to be hard, but we all have faith that together, we can create a great place for Maddie to come home to.
