24 Hour Paddle for Cancer--Portland

$5,417 of $7,000 goal

Raised by 85 people in 12 months

Team Portland (Nattie, Manny, Jason, Brad, Dan and Sallyannne) is happy to represent for our second year for this undertaking of easing the stress of those fighting cancer. Cancer is hard. It doesn't rest and it doesn't play nice. It not only takes its toll on the individual but the family and loved ones involved. Paddling for 24 hours is a piece of cake compared to what cancer fighters and their families have to endure.

We are not a foundation or a charity. We are a community of paddlers that want to give back.
Our goal is to raise as much money as we can for families arm wrestling with cancer. Every thousand dollars we raise will go straight into an envelope and be given to a family fighting the physically and mentally destroying battle of cancer. Every penny we raise will be going straight to families in the Portland, Oregon area.

On April 14th our team of 6 paddlers will start paddling on the Willamette River (rain or shine) while other teams all across the United States and Canada paddle on their local waters.. It is not a race. We will be paddling relay style. 2 paddlers will go out and paddle for an hour then the next 2 will go out and we will keep repeating that for 24 hours. We encourage you to come out and paddle with us or just say stop by and say hi.

Last year we filled 5 envelopes, this year we're hoping to fill at least 7. Every donation gets us to our goal and to making life a little less challenging for someone.

We will be happy to send you a Stand Up Portland decal as a thank you!! Assorted colors to choose from too!

Lastly, a big thanks to Troy at Monster & Sea for making this all happen, to Joe Nicolich, Josh Sanderson, Bob Reuter and the team at Gorge Performance for their support!28240516_15204741050_r.jpeg

The 24 for 2018 is in the books. It was a wild and wooly one too. The rain held off most of the day on Saturday but the wind didn't.

But cancer never holds off and it doesn't care about the conditions. That's why we paddled. For those fighting directly. For those fighting alongside their loved ones in support. For those we love. For those that can't. We go because we can.

Because of the kindness of Bob Rueter at Gorge Performance and his shuttling services, everyone had the chance to take advantage of the wind at least once and do a little wind and current assisted run.

And then the rain came. It is Oregon after all.

Willamette Sailing Club loaned us the use of their dock and grill and the amazing Josh Sanderson brought his boat up and the rest of the team was spread about between cars and a small trailer over the course of the night.

One team had an encounter with a cranky, territorial sea lion (all are ok. Several teams had an encounter with a territorial beaver. We all had encounters with rain, wind, sleep deprivation and not enough coffee.

We also had AMAZING encounters.

Like the amazing network of our community donors. Like the amazing folks that showed up early and brought us food (Kathryn, Noa, Sue, Jody, Misako)and the folks that came out and paddled with us (Tracy, Fred, Maria, James, Eric, Misako).
Like Donna that brought everything for an amazing dinner from the grill.
Like Joe who donated time and material to make the Sand Up Portland decals and who provided us with radios and and his company.
Like Gary from the Portland Rock Gym that not only made a big donation and who is fighting some crud but came out to see what we were up to and to cheer us on.

So for us, another 24 in is the books but for our recipients and their network, the battle goes on. There's still time, so if you can, please donate. You are making a difference.
TEAM PORTLAND 2018--Powered by love!
