My name is Connor Eden, I have written and illustrated my own book, I began doing the artwork first which then led onto the story. After leaving university I pretty much like many others found it extremely difficult to find a job in the field that I studied, and being that I studied fine art at university, it didn’t give me much option in the working world, especially where I live.
A few key events led to the creation of what is now my book, which is titled, Breed, now before I go into the events, this isn’t a pity me campaign, it’s just to explain where this began. The first event was the passing of my nan, this in my adult life time is the first major death that I had to deal with and to be honest it made me rethink many things and question choices I had made, this was soon followed with the breakdown of my relationship at the time, I had to move back in with my parents, during this time I was volunteering at a facility that offered arts and crafts days with adults that had disabilities, I was also working part time as a cleaner in a bar, I poured all my efforts into the volunteering based on the promise that it would lead onto a full time paid position, it resulted in me losing my part time job, a few weeks passed and still no full time role, after a lot of thinking I left the volunteer role and started looking for work, nobody would take me on, so I had to sign onto jobseekers allowance, which I’m extremely grateful exists because things at home money wise had gotten out of hand and I wasn’t paying my way, 12 weeks had passed on jobseekers, I had been turned down by every single job, now by this stage I’m extremely bitter and angry, and then I had an interview at a super market, now outside I sat in my cheap suit that my mam bought me, and I hoped and prayed I would get this job and then suddenly I thought to myself half a year ago you would been full of energy, doing artwork, presenting it to people and now your outside a supermarket wishing that you could get this job, now there isn’t anything wrong with working in a supermarket, it’s just not what I wanted to be doing, so sat outside waiting until it’s time to go in and say I’m here for my interview, I was sitting next to an old man and he started to talk to me and I think on some level he could tell I was pretty depressed, and I told him if I don’t get this job I’m robbing that bank next door, because this won’t be me forever, which of course is extremely dramatic and stupid but at that stage in my life I was both of those things, but I got the job, now I found myself with a new energy and I thought I wonder what would have happened if I didn’t get that job, and then I thought if I had kids I wonder what they would have been like with a criminal for a dad, and so I came up with a fictional daughter, pretending that in this alternate world her and I would run around causing trouble, and what followed was truly a great journey which I’m still on, I started writing a story about a father and daughter, basing the father on myself, making him have all my short comings as a man, taking situations that have happened in my own life and putting them in the book, but making the main character, the daughter have to handle them, making me think about my choices and how they affect everything, and it led to this amazing story and the artwork began to pour out the characters all came from that dark period, I became a far better person, every single night I have worked on this book for the past two years, and with the writing complete and the artwork well on its way to being done it will be completed totally in January,
Now I find myself at this stage in my life, I presented my book to a panel at Enterprise Place in Sunderland, and they loved it, I now have just started a 12 month membership with them, this is still very new to me but the hope is that they will help me get my book out there to the masses, but I need funding, I want to make a real go of this, the plot of Breed spans three to four books, but the first will set the tone for the rest, with your funding I will be able to get my book to a level I never thought possible, mix that with the guidance that enterprise place offers its members, in the form of helping start a business, I really feel as though this could be something very big.
The Setting
the setting is a futuristic dystopian world, it’s never mentioned where it all takes place, I leave that open ended, having no connotations with any place we know of. The world itself has a heavy presence of technology and cybernetics, the people have alien beliefs to our own, and with old world architecture know to us, mixed with new and odd designs of this modern world, it gives a real sense of life and character to the setting.
the book will have an old school layout, similar to a childs book, one side writing the other a piece of artwork, the story for me has a very fairy tale feel to it, with dark themes.
The book summed up in one sentence, an impressionable mind evolving in a world, it should have never been in.
