3D Printed Prosthetics

£500 of £500 goal

Raised by 7 people in 31 months
This fund is for a 3D printer to provide free prosthetic hands for men, women and children in Bolivia.

The charity I am currently volunteering for provides free prosthetic legs and arms for anyone who turns up at the clinic. These are mostly low income Bolivians however all sorts of people turn up at the clinic.

3D printing hands and other useful components would really help change the lives of many people here.

The cost here includes the 3D printer, 2 rolls and filament shipping and tax to buy a Duplicator i3 v2.1 from Wanhoa USA. The product can be seen here:
http://wanhaousa.com/products/duplicator-i3-steel-frame

I don't have a huge pool of friends and family to call on so please share this with everyone, it is not a huge sum of money but it will really make a huge difference.

The charity website can be found here:

Thanks :)

Hi All,
Here is a video one of my fellow volunteers Tom put together. One of the Arm / Hand prosthetic made with the new printer appears near the end of the video.

I'll have some more photos and videos coming up of the upcoming 3D prints.

Hi All,

The fund was setup to replace a exiting 3D printer which had not work worked for the last 9 months. It worked for the first month it was purchased but since then volunteers at the clinic have failed to get it working.

However, in the last couple months we managed to diagnose the problem and find a fix. We had to replace many of the parts.

The biggest issue was that the charity has a steady influx of volunteers, and over the life of the printer have all tweaked and modded the software and hardware; all trying to get it to work. What I found was that it had been modified so much that it was so far off factory setting. It had once caught fire and the power input had melted!

After replacing the entire print carriage, sensors, one sketchy stepper motor and re-flashing the firmware we managed to get a print to work!

We have also now provided the first hand to a man missing is left forearm and hand. I'm going to post some information about this so you can see how your money has helped :)

As we now have a working printer again we need to assess where the money needs to go.
The following is being considered:
- Building a heated bed for the printer
- Building a 3D scanner to scan stumps to better print forearm attachments.
- Going towards a second printer to help speed up production time.

The money donated will go towards the project of providing hands and arms for people here.

If you have any ideas on what you think it should be spent on please let me know.

I'll have a blog post showing more information on the hands we build and will let you all know.

Thanks again all for your help :)
