Emma & Martin's UK Move

Donation protected

Hello, we are Emma and Martin, a couple who met online. I (Emma) am English and Martin is Norwegian.
We began our relationship online in August 2011 and after many months Skype-ing, we met for the first time in December when I visited Tromsø, Martin's home.
Leaving Martin after those 10 short days tore me up, and I had to get back to him on a more permanent arrangement.
I moved to Norway in February 2012.
After several happy months renting a small studio flat, we lost our housing contract in July. (Our landlords said that they'd ask us if we'd like to renew our contract when it ended, instead, when the time came, they told us that they'd found a new tenant and had upped the rent.)
We became homeless at the worst time, right in the middle of a huge influx of students to the University, all looking for housing. Martin's apprenticeship also finished leaving us with savings, but no income. We spent the first month of "homelessness" living with Martin's sister, but then she moved to a smaller house and we spent the second month living in a garage (Artic-Norway - it was flippin' freezing! ;) ). I did manage to find a job, however.
We found a place to live, but Martin never found work (he is trained to work on boats, but I am totally reliant on his car to get me to work as I can't drive and there are no buses where we live, so he has been searching for jobs on land, with no luck, not even replies. We also had to bike to the nearest bus stop (30mins-1hr in dark and snow) for months, because we relied on Chrismas money gifts to get the car on the road. )
Martin has been unemployed for 7 months now and my job is not enough to support us both here anymore. The government are refusing to pay jobseekers allowance for the next 2 months because we are going to England (I borrowed the flight money from my brother and haven't seen my family in almost 8 months.) Each payslip comes into my hands and straight out again and we buy out-of-date food and the cheapest brands to eat.

Here's (totally honestly) what I earn and where it goes;

10,000 NOK (average) pay cheque.

Rent: 5000 NOK (Very reasonable actually!)
Internet: 260 NOK
Electric: 800 (in a good month) NOK
Food: 2000 NOK
Car insurance: 700 NOK
TV: 223 NOK
Fuel: (in a good month) 2000 NOK
Phone bill: 400 NOK

Total: -1383 NOK

We try to earn any extra we can by selling things we own, Martin has contact with only his mother and brothers/sisters and they have helped all they can, a great deal and we're extremely thankful.

We decided that a move to my home-island of the Isle of Wight is currently the safest option for us. I know many people there, have many friends and more family members to help us out. We have places to stay and people to stay with if we were without a home (here we'd be back into the extremely competitive and expensive renting market, most likely homeless agian.) Martin also has opportunities to utilise his work skills again.

I don't regret my move to Norway, it has been a great experience to live and work here and full of amazing opportunities and things to learn, but we believe that we should both be on the island, judging by the two situations.

I have set my goal at £550, because that is the amount I currently owe my brother for the flights. If we could make anything at all on this site, it would help free-up some of my earnings so that I can begin to pay off my brother and keep some money towards our eventual one-way tickets to our new home.

Thank you for reading our story and many thanks for any donations we recieve, we are extremely grateful, even for just £5.

Emma and Martin.
