Black journalists for Pittsburgh

Donation protected
The Pittsburgh journalism community is much less diverse than the city it covers. Only 9 percent of journalists in Pittsburgh are black, Hispanic or Asian, according to a 2016 survey by the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation. The mission of this fellowship is to do something about that.

In Pittsburgh, opportunities for paid internships in journalism are scarce, and it's particularly difficult for a nonprofit like ours to offer them. However, we, at PublicSource, believe that it is important to nurture, and pay for, young talent.

Last summer, as part of a new initiative to promote gender and race parity in Pittsburgh journalism, we offered a paid fellowship for an aspiring black female journalist to join our newsroom. Following a rigorous application process, Zoe Vongtau joined our team of experienced journalists and nonprofit professionals in delivering public-service journalism for a better Pittsburgh. She helped launch our popular #PublicStreetsPGH  series in which we tell the extraordinary stories of ordinary Pittsburghers.

We hope that our city and our readers are willing to help us fund this opportunity for Summer 2018. This time, it is open to black girls and boys. (Our experience with the Teen Voices  series was a big factor to expand this year’s program.)

Your contribution will help us to recruit a young fellow at the high school level, something few news outlets do. We're doing this because we believe there is a need to establish a pipeline of young black journalists to cover our city and the region.

You can help us inspire high school students to consider journalism as a career path and write history that is more inclusive and reflective of our community. It’s as important as ever to invest in a future generation of journalists who will hold the powerful to account and shed light on stories that are not being covered. Our community needs an independent, free press and good journalists who are passionate about fact-based reporting and fair coverage.

PublicSource is a nonprofit media organization delivering public-service journalism at publicsource.org.
