Preston’s Unexpected Cancer Diagnosis

Cancer. No mother ever wants to hear those words uttered over her child. But on Saturday, June 29, 2019, that is exactly what I heard.
Preston had been experiencing left-sided abdominal pain for approximately one week. He had previously been treated with muscle relaxers and a steroid by a doctor at MD360 for what was thought to be a muscle spasm. Without medical insurance or funds, Preston was unable to afford thorough testing to rule out other causes.
Due to worsening acute pain, he decided to go to Hillcrest Hospital ER for evaluation on Friday evening, June 28, 2019. The ER doctor ordered testing, suspicious of kidney stones. After a CT scan and a call from the radiologist, those shocking words were spoken: “You have testicular cancer.”
Preston was transported by EMS to Greenville Memorial Hospital around 3am to be admitted. Later that morning, an ultrasound would confirm two masses in the left testicle, and surgery was scheduled. Dr Maloney explained that swollen lymph nodes were creating a blockage in the left kidney so a stent needed to be placed to relieve the pressure.
Surgery performed included removal of left testicle to remove the cancer and a temporary stent placed from the left kidney to the bladder. We are awaiting pathology results and an appointment with an oncologist to discuss further treatment with chemotherapy.
Our family is thankful for the outpouring of love and support for Preston during this time. Due to the nature of his medical care, he will be out of work for awhile. This page has been created to help support him and his girlfriend, Taylor, so he can focus on recovery. He has applied for hospital sponsorship; however, he has no medical coverage.
