Help Send Deshean To College

My name is De’Shean Hatton. I am a resident in Southeast, Washington, DC. I live in Ward 8 which is the ward closest to poverty. Wealth is not on our side. I am an incoming freshman at Endicott college. I plan to study criminal Justice and become a rugby phenom. I was recruited but rugby doesn’t offer full scholarships. The school is a Predominantly White institution. This was focused on due to well performance at Gonzaga College High School. I tried hard to get as much financial aid as possible. As a Gonzaga man, you should have the courage to ask for help when in need. The schools tuition is 50k, and I was able to obtain 33k in scholarships and grants. I went up for orientation and expected to hear a less out of pocket cost but didn’t go in my favor. DC residence, if you attend a public university or HBCU, you receive a grant for 10k towards your tuition. My mom and I banked on the grant. We tried appealing for it and was turned down. My mother takes care of my 3 younger siblings, who she’s trying to put through school. Paying 17k out of pocket is almost impossible for her, and I’m not going to take away from her or them. This would cause extra stress added to her for years, and degrade my siblings progression through life. I love the school so much and it would mean everything for me to spend my college years there.
