Help iSchool Students attend WIPO Conference

Donation protected
12 students from the iSchool at the University of Toronto will be travelling to Geneva to attend the World Intellectual Property Organization’s 38th Session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights from April 01 to April 05, 2019. This session is dedicated to discussing the limitations and exceptions for libraries, archives, and museums under international copyright treaties.

This is an exciting learning opportunity for graduate students who will be pursuing careers in information policy, libraries, archives and museums management and publishing as it will acquaint them with the critical issues related to copyright in the context of libraries, archives and museums from the perspectives of the various stakeholder groups and nation states involved. Students will become immersed in the issues; take part in the development of an intervention; and meet with a range of high level WIPO officials, NGOs, and delegates from member states, to discuss and negotiate the policy issues facing libraries, archives and museums.

The trip to Geneva to attend the WIPO SCCR meeting will contextualize the national and international spheres and discourses that shape a nation’s domestic policy.  By observing, reflecting on (and possibly contributing to) the interventions on behalf of libraries, archives and museums, the students will get a hands-on experience of policy in situ as it is being shaped in an international arena.

With less than two weeks away, these students need all the financial support they can receive, as the cost of attending the conference is over $2,000 for each student.

This is a student-led initiative on GoFundMe and we welcome any contribution to this great learning opportunity. Thank you for your valuable contribution.

We thank the various partners who supported us already, and we extend our thanks to our course instructors at the Faculty: Nadia Caidi, Victoria Owen, and Jean Dryden.
