1000 cups of buna for Abreham

While working for us  as a driver and interpreter, Abreham Gebre's van was set on fire during the unrest in Yirgalem, Ethiopia. Abreham has insurance but it does not cover situations such as this. His car was on the property of the lodge the family was staying at and the although the lodge also has insurance, like Abreham's policy, it does not cover this. 

The lodge owner will be putting in a claim to the government which may result in some compensation but that process is commonly known to take years and often does not result in compensation. 

Abreham is beloved by many families around the world. Hired to be a driver and translator, families quickly discover how much more he is.  Importantly, Abreham provides his services at a reasonable rate and for less than many others. This has meant for many families, that they have been able to come to Ethiopia sooner than they would be able to if they had to save money for the amount other tour operators charge. 

Abreham is the father of two young girls. His family is dependent on the income that he secures through driving.

We are calling this fundraiser, 1000 cups of buna. As many of you know, buna is a symbol of hospitality in Ethiopia. Everywhere you stop, someone will offer you buna. Typically, it is pan roasted, pounded to a fine grind with a mortar and pestle and cooked over a charcoal flame. This ritual is ancient and binds all who are blessed to experience it, together.

We invite you to be a part of this circle. This coming together as brothers and sisters in recognition of the village that we are.

We met Abreham Gebre 2 1/2 years ago when he was our driver on our first trip back to Ethiopia to visit family. He has helped us stay in touch with our family there. While he is not related to us he has become a close family friend. 

The money collected here will be going to a bank account in my name. The bank account has been opened for this express purpose and it is not used for any other purpose other than to collect money to be sent to Abreham Gebre. We've chosen a US bank that sends wire transfers to Ethiopia and have confirmed that we can send the amount we're raising. 

The money will be wire transferred directly to Abreham Gebre's bank account in Ethiopia. We have confirmed with that bank that they accept wire transfers from our US bank.
