What is CAR-T therapy?

Currently on the NHS, CAR-T therapy  is only offered as a treatment for children and young people under the age of 25 with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after all other treatment avenues have been exhausted. In people with B-cell lymphoma it is only offered if a patient relapses after two or more other treatments have been tried.

The therapy is tailored for each individual patient.  The treatment reprogrammes the patient’s own immune system cells which are then used to target their cancer.

Some people are ineligible for CART therapy on the NHS, because of this people often opt to go private and pay for CAR-T therapy themselves. This can be extremely expensive and can often involve receiving the treatment in another country.
