Jay's Journey

Don protégé
This is the story so far of Baby Jay.

Jay was born in November 2014 and he is the youngest child of Karen and Mark Goodman.   They live in Norfolk with Jay's siblings; Joshua (12), Reece (9), George (6) and Maddie (4).

Friday the 11th March 2016, is a day forever etched in the memories of this wonderful family.  Baby Jay was diagnosed with a Brain Tumour, he is just 16 months old.
He was immediately transferred to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridgeshire (approx 2 hours from home).  Where he had to undergo an emergency 10 hour operation to remove the tumour.  The tumour at this stage was approximately the size of a large orange, and it was wrapped round the back and base of his brain, and intertwines throughout.

The surgeons were fantastic, and managed to get most of the tumour, but there is a small part of the tumour, which they couldn't remove.

Tests revealed that the tumour is a Grade 3 Anaplastic Ependymoma.

In such a short space of time, Jay has endured multiple operations.  Amongst other things, he has had a shunt fitted to drain the fluid away from his brain.  He has a Hickman Line (for Chemotherapy) which is now a permanent fixture to his chest for the next 14 months.  He has also had blood transfusions.

The plan from here, is a course of chemotherapy, Jay will undergo a lengthy 14 month course of treatment, which should hopefully start on Tuesday 5th April, if everything goes to plan.

Apart from the obvious trauma the family are going through with Jay’s illness, one of the hardest things to watch is seeing this loving close knit happy family, being separated.  One parent stays at the hospital with Jay, while the other is with the older children, trying to manage working, maintain some kind of normality and stability, while also providing emotional support for the children and support for the other parent at the hospital.  Family and friends are helping, but nothing is a substitute for having a family together.

We are raising money to help Jay and his family through this horrendous time.  Any money raised will be used by the family to help ease the financial pressure of staying away from home.  It will be used to provide equipment Jay may need in recovery, and to provide a means to be able to enjoy some quality family time for everyone, on the days/weeks he is feeling well.  Once Jay has kicked Cancer to the outer reaches of space, we hope they will have enough money in the pot to be able to go on a nice family holiday.

Anything you can spare will truly be appreciated and used wisely towards anything Jay needs.

We will be holding other fundraisers throughout the course of treatment too.  To raise money for the various charities which have helped with accommodation, emotional support etc during the journey so far.
