Postal Poetry Library

Hi! I'm Harula, a poet, performer and creative facilitator based in the South West of England. But this isn't about me, though perhaps it begins with me.

I love poetry. I love reading it. I love writing it. Since the pandemic hit the UK in March 2020 poetry has gotten me through. Turns out, 9 months on, the pandemic is far from over. People are spending more time at home, many alone and, if they're anything like me, too much time with screens. Two significant ripple effects of the pandemic are a looming mental health crisis, and a desperate hunger for an adapted provision of creativity and the arts. This project addresses both of these.

Books have always been precious to me. Real touchable, sniffable, page turnable books. However, current circumstances mean libraries are open only for choose and collect or eBooks, people are counting pennies (and new books are expensive) and there are far too many unpleasant things coming through the post (post Christmas bank statements, tax return reminders and the like...) so I had an idea...

I am starting a Poetry Library that will operate through the post!

Why?

Because it’s nice to get nice things through the post. Real things. And post might be one of the best ways to share nice things for a while.

Because I want to read more poetry, and help others to read more poetry, because I love poetry. Because poetry can light up our darker moments.

Because I believe reading poetry can be powerful balm, a real support in these times, and having it delivered direct to your door means you're more likely to give it a go.

Because I know many, MANY very talented poets. And I want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to enjoy their work.

How?

Well, that's in process! But what I can tell you is...

The idea has huge juice since being shared yesterday! 17 poets in my network are, as I write,  sending me books to add to my personal collection, all ready to be sent out again on loan! They're sending them to me for FREE!

Using this Postal Poetry Library will be FREE!

I will send all potential by-mail-book-borrowers a current list of available titles  and they will choose. I will then send their chosen book direct to their address, and will include a SAE for the return of the book!

Alternatively...I also want to offer a monthly pot luck poetry option! Where borroers are sent a book on the first of each month, to be returned by the end of that month, in time to receive the next title, which I will choose on their behalf.

So what's your money for?

Funds raised here will be used exclusively for:

:-  the postage and packaging of books.

:- return postage and packaging.

:- the purchase of titles requested by potential borrowers.

Simple as.

Thanks so much for your support!
