Support Victims of Kumba School Shooting

Don protégé
“The name VICTORY wasn’t just a name given to my little cousin” Mr Amstrong Asopo explains. The name “Victory” was symbolic of the over 10 years of miscarriages, insults and birth difficulty her mom, my sister went through. She was termed “barren” because she could not conceive and bear a child. That name was a general call for celebration, a symbol of hope, joy and trust in the infinite possibilities that holds the Universe.
Victory was “The Miracle Child" of my family! He was the child no one ever thought would come to be. He dried my sister's tears and showed other women that the universe holds a ‘Victory’ for them too! Today, 11 years later, the Miracle child was gunned down.

Victory Camibon is only one example of the many beautiful young souls that were brutally snatched from us and their families. At least seven (07) children have been killed and 12+ wounded on Saturday 24.10.2020 following an attack by unknown men carrying guns and machetes at the Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in Kumba, South West Region of Cameroon.

“They found the children in class and they opened fire on them,” city sub-prefect Ali Anougou told Reuters. Some students were reportedly injured jumping from second-storey windows for fear of their lives. Mostly girls were affected between the ages of 11 and 14.

It was their first year in secondary school and they had only studied for two weeks. At the time this campaign was launched, many of these kids continue to fight for their lives at local hospitals in Cameroon.

“She was helpless and she was shouting ‘mum please help me’, and I told her ‘only your God can save you now’,” Isabel Dione said to her 12 year old daughter who had sustained a severe gun injury (watch video on Al Jazeera report).

Join us through this campaign to mobilize resources to support the victims and their families.

What can we do?
If we could, we would do everything possible to bring Victory back to life. On the 25.10.2020, officials said that we have lost one more child who was already under medical attention. Let's act while we still can to save the lives of our children and most importantly to:
1. Bring direct and urgent medical care (where necessary to complement government efforts)
2. Support their families with running costs (food, transport etc.)
3. Accommodation: Support parents especially for victims who have been hospitalized in cities away from their home town.
4. Token of financial support to bereaved families.
5. A small team of 3 community development workers as well as volunteers to mobilize, disseminate and ensure that the support gets directly to the victims.

In order for all these to happen, we have estimated it at 32,000 EUR. With just 1,600 Eur, we will already bring considerable support to each of the 20+ affected families. Over 50% of this will go to  food, transport and accommodation, 20% for any additional medical care, 25% to bereaved families and 5% to coordination team and volunteer support.

We also welcome in-kind support like volunteers willing to bring psycho-social support to guardians/parent of the kids. Those who would like to support the team to gather data and track progress of victims in the form of numbers, imagery and even physical visits.

Why did this happen?
According to many reporters as well as Cameroonian officials, the incident that led to the death of innocent school children is connected to a long standing conflict (2016) between the Anglophone separatists and the Cameroonian government. This conflict has since led to the death of some 3,000 people, some 600,000+ Internally Displaced and forced some 50,000+ into refugee camps in Nigeria a UN report says. Sadly enough, these innocent children seem to have been caught in this deadly conflict, one that William Lawrence in Al Jazeera's report describes as an “escalation that we have not yet seen in the anglophone crisis in Cameroon”.
