Statistics about Transgender People

• According to the 2018 Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces (SSPPS), an estimated 1 million people in Canada are sexual minorities—that is, they reported their sexual orientation as gay, lesbian, bisexual or a sexual orientation that is not heterosexual
• Approximately 75,000 Canadians aged 15 and over indicated on the above survey that they are transgender
• Transgender Canadians are more likely to have experienced violence than cisgender Canadians and more likely to report mental health as poor or fair than cisgender people
• The Ontario-wide Trans pulse project suggests that transgender individuals are a medically underserved population and experience inequalities in health care access
• The costs of transitioning can be a six-figure bill. Male to female and female to male surgeries can cost upwards of $25,000, and this doesn’t include other costly procedures like facial feminization, breast augmentation and double mastectomy or hysterectomy

The cost of not transitioning can lead to severe psychological distress.
