After three decades of wartime
destruction and neglect, every facet of Afghanistan’s infrastructure is in
disarray. Access to safe drinking water was a serious issue even before the
war, and the war has further deteriorated the availability of drinking water,
as well as sanitation facilities in Afghanistan. Based on statistics provided
by the Government of Afghanistan, only 20 percent of Afghans across the country
have access to safe drinking water in cities and villages. The water they drink
is often unsanitary and leads to many waterborne illnesses, diarrhea and
dysentery. Poor hygiene practices, lack of access to sanitation and clean water
contribute to poor health and high prevalence of diarrhea, a major cause of
child mortality in Afghanistan
The Oobah Project,
"oobah" meaning water in Pashto, serves to provide assistance for the
installation and maintenance of clean water delivery systems, specifically
water well pumps, in rural villages in Afghanistan.
Completed Projects:
The Oobah Project has thus far cosponsored
one well with the Kabul University School of Engineering. We are proud to say they
now have water for agriculture. The university plans to install a water pump
and a reservoir at their own cost.
We have also completed construction
of three brand new wells and have repaired two broken water well pumps in
Qarabagh, Kabul, Afghanistan. The first well in Bagh Areq, Qarabagh is in the
middle school for the students. The school currently has one well, but that one
well serves more than 150 students and with only a few minutes of “tafreh” (break),
it is not accessible to everyone. The second well is located in Qalaye
Qulukhaq, Qarabagh, Afghanistan. This well serves 20-30 households and is
publicly available for everyone to use. The third well is located in the
madrassah, or religious school, of Bagh Areq, Qarabagh.
Current projects:
A water well pump will be built in Terah,
Paktia, Afghanistan. About 20-30 households that live on the edge of the Terah
mountains near the Terah pass do not have easy access to safe drinking water.
This well will provide that water for them.
Each well costs approximately
$1,500-2,000 and project costs include not only equipment and machinery, but
labor as well. Different types of machinery are necessary to dig into the earth
and then to build the water well pump.
