Dear Friends and Family,

In August I will be traveling to Cambodia for a service/ learning and cultural immersion program organized by the YMCA and Khmerican, Inc. This trip will allow me to work with other Cambodian-Americans, in the YMCA Street Children Program at schools under the Cambodia YMCA, in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

I need to raise $4000 for this trip. Your donations will cover flights, room and board, 3 meals a day, insurance for emergencies, and 10% is donated to the schools under the Cambodia YMCA program.

Your donation will make this trip a reality! Thank you!

Studying Khmer culture and writing for Khmerican has impressed upon me the need for social justice in Cambodia. By interviewing subjects and participating in the Seattle Khmer community, I have learned about the civil rights atrocities that they face, immigration, deportation, and I want to give back to Cambodia through service with the YMCA.

Further, I am interested in going to Cambodia for the cross-cultural perspective between the United States and Cambodia. As a contributing writer for Khmerican, this visit would enable me to further develop insights into the Khmer worldview. In interviewing Khmer subjects, I will have a greater understanding of the Cambodian socio-historical and political context to draw upon.

I am interested in this program because it is an opportunity to strengthen my Khmer language skills. I am limited to interviewing and connecting with Cambodian English speakers. I want to be fluent in Khmer, so that I can Interview non-English speakers within the Diaspora and the world. During this trip, I would converse with Native Cambodian speakers which will help develop my pronunciation and ability to communicate confidently and effectively in a broad range of everyday situations.

I studied religion and art in college and I am fascinated by sacred sites of the Buddhist and Hindu tradition. I would love to have the opportunity to visit Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Phrom, and Banteay Srei temples; as well as observe Apsara dancers, Naga serpents and other figures from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Firsthand experience of the country that was the site of the Khmer Rouge Genocide would be indispensable. This cultural knowledge and experience will further aid in developing intercultural relationships with Khmer around the world.

This is a program coordinated by Long Beach YMCA and Khmerican. If you have questions about the details of our service-learning project you may contact our team leaders directly at [email redacted] or [email redacted].

Once again, thank you so much for your support!

Sincerely,

Lauren Imbrock
