Dr. Martin Salia is the only health care worker from the United States who has died from Ebola. Dr. Salia was Chief Medical Officer and the only surgeon at United Methodist Kissy Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. In 2014, he was diagnosed with Ebola and medically evacuated to Nebraska Medical Center where he died on November 17. He was 44. Of all the thousands of health care workers from the United States who have been to West Africa, he is the only one who has made the ultimate sacrifice.

His sudden passing caused grief and sorrow, not only in Sierra Leone, but also in the global medical community. He had partnered with King’s College London to revitalize surgery in Sierra Leone. His loss is devastating in a country with only eight remaining surgeons.
He left behind a wife and two sons who live in Maryland. Through many kind donations, the Salias have paid off $250,000 in expenses for the State Department medical evacuation and medical care. There is still a  need to fund the sons’ high school and college education. The oldest son, Maada, is attending a community college. The youngest son, Hinwaii, is in his senior year in high school.

Dr. Salia left behind a tremendous legacy of patient care, teaching, mentoring, and spiritual healing. Very devoted to his family, he loved his wife and sons dearly. He also left behind a legacy of two sons whom he wanted to receive an education so they could fulfill their aspirations and dreams.
