<div>En julio de este año, a pocos meses de mi boda con Lore, mi compañera en esta aventura, decidí por pura intuición, hacerme una resonancia magnética de cerebro solo para "estar tranquilo". No tenía síntomas. Pero esa decisión - guiada por intuición - cambió mi vida por completo: me detectaron un astrocitoma difuso grado II, un tumor maligno en el lado izquierdo del cerebro.

<div><strong>El cáncer no detiene el amor, lo fortalece </strong>
</div>

<div>El diagnóstico fue un golpe. En un instante, todo nuestro plan de vida se detuvo de golpe. Lore y yo decidimos transformar el miedo en amor: cancelamos la boda planeada, y nos casamos en una pequeña ceremonia para recordarnos que el amor también es una forma de sanar.

<div>Una semana después, el 16 de agosto, me operaron. Fue una cirugía compleja que duró mas de 8 horas, un poco más de dos de estas, estuve despierto mientras me hacían pruebas para asegurarse que mis funciones mentales siguieran intactas. Salí bien de la operación, habían extirpado el tumor, pero el camino no terminó ahí… En septiembre los estudios confirmaron que quedó un tumor residual.

<div><strong>Tuve que adaptarme a esta nueva realidad, y el miedo a no poder volver a hacer endoscopías, a dar consulta, a ser el médico que quiero ser, es enorme.</strong>

<div>La enfermedad amenaza mi futuro, mi memoria, mis funciones cognitivas, mi capacidad de seguir ejerciendo mi carrera. Lo que está en juego es la integridad de mi cerebro. Los riesgos son muy serios: deterioro cognitivo, confusión, pérdida de memoria, y eventualmente, la posibilidad de demencia. En pocas palabras, que el cáncer se robe mi capacidad para ser médico y de vivir mi vida. Estoy muy joven y aún tengo mucho que dar y compartir.

<div><strong>Una oportunidad para seguir siendo yo</strong>

<div>Pero tengo esperanza. Encontraron que el tumor tiene la mutación IDH, lo que me hace candidato a un tratamiento especializado. Es una quimioterapia oral que bloquea y detiene el crecimiento de este tumor residual.

<div>Este tratamiento es la llave para preservar mi mente y mis funciones intactas. Me dará tiempo sin progresión, para que pueda continuar ejerciendo mi profesión y disfrutar mi vida con Lore, mi familia y gente querida, sin temor a que la enfermedad se descontrole.

<div>I have dedicated my life to being a doctor. I specialized in gastroenterology and endoscopy to help improve the lives of others. Many of my patients have told me that I saved their lives, but I’ve always believed I am merely an instrument, like anyone who does what they truly love. <div>In July of this year, just a few months before my wedding with Lore, my partner in this adventure, I decided, purely out of intuition, to get a brain MRI, just “to be sure.” I had no symptoms. But that decision, guided by intuition, changed my life completely: the scan revealed a grade II diffuse astrocytoma, a malignant tumor on the left side of my brain.

<div><strong>Cancer doesn’t stop love, it strengthens it.</strong>

<div>The diagnosis was a shock. In an instant, all our life plans came to a halt. Lore and I decided to transform fear into love: we canceled our big wedding plans and got married in a small ceremony, to remind ourselves that love, too, is a form of healing.

<div>A week later, on August 16, I underwent surgery. It was a complex operation that lasted more than eight hours, two of which I was awake, while the doctors tested my brain functions to make sure they remained intact. The surgery went well; they were able to remove the tumor, but the journey didn’t end there. In September, follow-up tests confirmed that a residual tumor remains.

<div>I’ve had to adapt to this new reality, and the fear of not being able to perform endoscopies, see patients, or be the doctor I want to be, is immense.
</div>

</div>
<div>The disease threatens my future, my memory, my cognitive abilities, my capacity to keep practicing medicine. What’s at stake is the integrity of my brain. The risks are very serious: cognitive decline, confusion, memory loss, and eventually, the possibility of dementia. In short, this cancer could take away my ability to be a doctor and to live my life. I’m still young, and I have so much left to give and share.

<div>But I have hope. Tests showed that the tumor has an IDH mutation, which makes me a candidate for a specialized treatment, an oral chemotherapy that can block and stop the growth of the residual tumor.

<div>This treatment is the key to preserving my mind and my cognitive functions. It will give me time without disease progression, allowing me to keep practicing my profession and enjoy life with Lore, my family, and my loved ones, without the constant fear of the disease advancing.
