Luke Silliman's Recovery

Donation protected
Update: Today is Luke's birthday. He is now 18 years old and learning the new art of adulting as important decisions need to be made. He is almost ready to leave the hospital which is great news. He is healing well, and does not need inpatient rehab as originally believed.

Not great news: What we know right now is that his health insurance (Washington State Apple Care) does not cover routine medical appointments out of state, and Luke is not medically cleared to travel. They only offer catastrophic coverage--so essentially his hospital stay will be paid, and everything that comes next will be out-of-pocket/self-pay until January when Luke can be covered via Illinois Medicaid.

What's next: Luke will see both of his surgeons for follow-up appointments at Northwestern (self-pay with payment plan possible). They will refer him to a PT when he is healed enough to start therapy. Finding a PT might not be possible if he cannot pay out of pocket, so this is the most urgent need for funds. An exact dollar amount is not yet known.

What Luke has: The hospital provided a wheelchair for Luke, and he has a walker. Luke's family has been in Chicago with him, and will continue to travel there to support him. The school is being great about being supportive.

What Luke needs: He will need some basic adaptive equipment tomorrow, and a laptop by Monday when he hopes to slowly resume school as he was using the computer lab which won't be possible right now. He will also need funds for physical therapy, and secondly for bills from Northwestern doctors. We continue with the 10,000 target amount. Thank you so much for your support in every way.

On October 14th, Luke fell 30 feet from a bridge, where he was spending time with friends. He broke his hip,  lower spine and pelvis. He was transported to Northwestern Medical Center where he has had two surgeries.  He is incredibly grateful his injuries weren't worse, and that he survived the fall.  Doctors expect him to make a good, if slow, recovery.

Luke started his freshman year at Columbia College Chicago in September. He is studying Cinema arts and Television. His goal is to get walking and get back to college as soon as he can. We are raising funds to pay for medical costs that may arise in addition to what his insurance will cover. He had planned to work his way through school, but will not be able to work due to the healing process. Any funds that are not needed for medical costs will be applied directly to his education.
