The ocean and its creatures are in massive trouble, and I want to help.
I’m in Year 12 and excited and honoured to be one of just 25 other young Australians invited to attend the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). Now I’ve just got to get there! London is a long way from my home in coastal Port Macquarie, but as a diver, surfer and growing up by the ocean, I’ve been infused with a passion for the water, sea and its creatures. It’s this passion that has led me to pursue science as a career as I believe it can provide solutions to some of the biggest environmental problems of our time. Attending LIYSF will be inspirational and teach me things I will never be able to learn in a classroom in Port Macquarie. But such a great opportunity also comes at a great cost (full cost is $8600) Your support, big, small or teeny tiny, will help me partake in this life-changing program that will – in the long run – help me to return the favour by finding solutions to problems that will affect you, the environment and generations to come.
About the London International Youth Science Forum (24 July – 7 August 2019)
Founded in 1959, the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) aims to give a deeper insight into science and its applications for the benefit of all mankind and to develop a greater understanding between young people of all nations. It attracts over 500 students from almost 75 countries for a two-week session. The forum will be based at the Imperial College in South Kensington with a range of lectures, workshops and lab visits in and around London at institutions like Oxford and Cambridge. There is also an optional extension program from the 7-13th of August to visit the world’s leading research centre, CERN and visit the Science Museum in Paris.
My Track Record
You can be guaranteed I’ll make the most of this trip. My participation will provide a strong basis for my journey to become a scientist. It will allow me to network with students from across the world who I may even end up working with as we, the future generation, research and implement solutions to the world’s problems. Here are some of my previous achievements and I’ll apply the same passion, perseverance and hard work at LISYF 2019:

· Lions Youth of the Year Finalist 2018
· NSW Blues Awards for Excellence and Sportsmanship in Diving
· Silver Medal at School Sport Australia Championships (National Diving)
· Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award * and currently finalising Gold award
· Community Service – have received a community service award every year in high school
· Regular Patrolling member of Tacking Point Surf Lifesaving Club
· Active participant of Take 3 for the Sea
My Passion for Marine Science
I’d love to become a leader in providing vital solutions to conserving all life on earth, but particularly ocean life. One particular passion I have is to protect one of the most beautiful and mysterious ocean creatures - but unfortunately also one of the most misunderstood: Sharks. Sharks play a crucial role on this planet. They keep our largest and most important ecosystem healthy. Our existence, in part, is dependent upon theirs. Sharks have sat atop the oceans’ food chain keeping our seas healthy for over 450 million years. Oceans provide 1/3 of our world with food, produce more oxygen than all the rainforests combined, remove half of the atmosphere’s anthropogenic carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas), and control our planet’s temperature and weather. But despite their importance in the ocean system, up to 273 million sharks are caught and killed each year without a blink of eye and I want to be a part of providing solutions and research to enhance their welfare and that of oceans.
My Experience at the National Youth Science Forum Brisbane
I attended the NYSF program in Brisbane in January 2019 and came away even more inspired and passionate than I already was about pursuing a career in science. I believe the NYSF International Program (LIYSF) will continue to fuel my passion for science and give me much needed inspiration to follow my dream of becoming a Marine Scientist. NYSF was by far the best experience I have had in my life and I feel that the International Program will be the same if not better.
The International Program will give me a deeper understanding of all things science and broaden my understanding of working as a scientist across the world. After attending NYSF I was given clear guidance on my future study and career pathway and after hearing from Marine Scientists at lectures I now have hope that it is possible for me to achieve my dream career as a scientist. One of the speakers that stood out to me at NYSF was Dr. Kerrie Wilson who spoke about environmental conservation, something I am very passionate about. She spoke about how it is difficult to stay positive after witnessing the irreversible damage that has been done to the environment, this stood out to me as it is something I have experienced and I always seek to speak positively when I am talking about the environment and what we can do. Dr. Wilson gave many great tips and insights that I can use now and in the future and I believe that lectures at LIYSF will continue to fuel my positivity and passion.
My experience at the London International Youth Science Forum will bring me one step closer to becoming a leader in Science and your generosity and support will bring one step closer to getting to London to partake in this prestigious program.
NYSF has also provided this advice in relation to tax deductible donations:
The Australian Taxation Office has ruled that for a donation to be tax deductible, it must be donated directly to the NYSF. It is up to the NYSF’s discretion to apply any donated funds to a specific student. Donations of $2 and above may be tax deductible, depending on your particular tax situation.
