Hello, I am a nineteen year old girl from a small suburb of Akron, OH. I am in desperate need of help getting out of an abusive living situation.
I'm an aspiring artist and writer, and in 2014 went through a semester of college in hopes of chasing those dreams. After both a mentally and financially stressful year, I returned home with the intention of finding a job and saving up money for my sophomore year of school. My plans eventually shifted from that to moving in with a friend across the country, gaining residency in California, and then pursuing work and an education around the Bay Area.
However, my stay at home worsened the already volatile family dynamics. I live with my mother and younger sister (13), and my father. Throughout my childhood I always considered him strict yet well-meaning. However, going through counseling for an anxiety disorder and chronic depression and taking a closer look at his behavior has helped me (and my mother and sister) to realize the harsh reality of our situation.
It is still very much an open wound and difficult to talk about the details, but: my father is emotionally manipulative and abusive. Living under his thumb and in fear of his temper, despite how much I do not doubt he loves us, has put an incredible strain on everyone.
These past few months I have been home, it has gotten even worse. I constantly live in fear of saying the wrong thing, however small, to set him off. The three of us have suffered for a very long time, and my mother recognizes her need to protect us, but the fact of the matter is that we would not be able to sustain three people if they were to separate.
On July 20 during an encounter that turned physical, my father punched and threw himself at the bathroom door while I cried behind it, not for the first time understanding what a difficult and terrifying situation it had escalated to.
So, in an effort to protect myself and get out of a volatile living situation I can feel myself cracking mentally under, I am asking help. Originally I planned to move in the spring of 2015, but these events and my fear have pushed me to decide on an emergency trip. I'm packing what little I own, hoping my mother will help me, and planning to move in with a friend across the country.
On top of being unemployed, I have a life threatening thyroid disorder that I need medicine for. The $400 I am asking for will go towards my plane ticket, baggage costs, and hopefully enough extra to refill my required prescription once I am there, as my parents' insurance will likely not extend to doctors outside Ohio.
