Zeidler Dialogues--MKE to the Congo

DR CONGO FACILITATOR TRAINING PROGRAM

Working in partnership with the Public Conversations Project (Boston) and community leaders, Amethyst and Andrew Roth, based in the Congo, The Frank Zeidler Center for Public Discussion is developing a reconciliation dialogue program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This GoFundMe campaign continues the work we started in Goma, DRC this past November.  Raising $20,000 will allow us to return to the Congo to work with local leaders to translate and revise the facilitator training manual for the local context.  With the manual completed, we will train 80 Congolese faciliators who will host dialogues in Goma.   Raising $50,000 will allow these facilitators to map the issues of 11 surrounding villiages, and to complete an initial round of dialogues.

This reflects the first year in a five year program with the ultimate goal is to raise $230,000.  Our vision is to train and equip Congolese facilitators with capacities for working within local communities in conflict and post-conflict periods; to deepen the process of building trust between perceived antagonists in order to increase long-term socio-political development and stability.

Please consider donating to the Zeidler Center's MKE to DRC campaign!  Any amount will help us reach our goal.

BACKGROUND
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country in central Africa in the Great Lakes Region and is approximately the size of Western Europe.  Despite being one of the most mineral rich countries in the world, it is a country of extreme poverty, where 87 per cent of its 67 million people live on less than $1.45 a day.  Since 1992 the region has faced instability, war, and mass atrocity.  With approximately 48 rapes an hour, the DRC has been declared by the 2014 Caritas report as the “worst country in the world to be a woman.”  The North Kivu province in general, and the cities of Goma and Masisi in particular, are the areas currently most affected by war. Ethnic conflicts are mapped across land conflicts in this region, exacerbated by multiple national and international rebel militias who continue to wage war and engage in predatory mineral extraction.

 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Zeidler Center has been invited by the Global Outreach Foundation-Congo to train facilitators in the North Kivu region of the DRC.  These facilitators will lead community dialogues in order to build capacity for peace, reconciliation and sustainable development in the North Kivu region.

After being introduced to the Zeidler method by the Zeidler Center's director Katherine Wilson during discovery trip in November 2014, community leaders expressed their belief that the DR Congo Facilitator Training Program would help them respond positively to local issues through the tool of dialogue.

MISSION

This program will:
--Train facilitators in the Zeidler dialogue method;
--Map community issues in 11 villages around Masisi and Goma;
--Support trained facilitators in holding an initial round of dialogues;
--Debrief facilitators before and after community dialogues;
--Produce a region specific curriculum and facilitator manual to train more facilitators in DRC and make the program self-sustaining;
--Send facilitators out again for new community dialogues.

We need your support to raise the funds for this vital work!  Thank you for your generosity!
