Medical Supplies for Thailand

Donation protected

In July 2017 I will be travelling to Thailand to volunteer in the Phitsanulok Hospital with Gap Medics.

For my trip to Thailand, I hope to be well prepared basic medical supplies to donate to the hospital to assist with equipment we take for granted in developed nations. These will include gloves, hair nets, face masks, scrubs and sanitiser. Any leftover funds will be put towards the purchase of medical technology/supplies with the guidance of the hospital and what it requires.

During my previous Gap Medics placement in Tanzania, I realised the  desperate need for basic medical supplies in these developing nations. I witnessed nurses and doctors dealing with potentially HIV infected blood without gloves, simply because they didn't have the funds for them. One of my duties was to pin down children, holding them still for medical procedures in the absence of pain relief/numbing agents as they did not have the funds for these things. In this hospital, there is only one monitor for patient vital signs, and only one oxygen machine, available only to dying patients. Broken or dirty rubber gloves were reused and improvised to make tornequays due to the lack of these, and multiple people were placed head to toe in hospital beds due to a shortage. Some patients even had to find place on the floor.

I hope to see some of these inequalities eliminated in Thailand by being able to provide the Phitsanulok Hospital with some supplies during my time there.
