Bonham Academy Robotics Club

My name is Dave Lopez; I'm a Southtown resident, Bonham parent and work in the Space Sciences Division at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.  Last year I looked into starting a Robotics afterschool program for our kids at Bonham Academy, our local public K-8 school.  With the principal's (Mr Webber) blessing and the help of Gabriel Shelton, John Hartman, John Gonzalez, Maria Rivera and my wife Sonia, we were able to offer "LEGO Club" for kids K-3rd grade.  At this level we hope to spark interest in science and technology using LEGO Simple Machines.

This upcoming school year, I'm hoping to expand the program to include 4-5 graders.  In order to do this, we need LEGO Mindstorm EV3 Robot sets and laptops.  Currently there is no district funding for this project.  I'm hoping that in time, the district will see the value of adding robotics to the current curriculum; in the meantime, we can offer a volunteer-based afterschool program.

My goal is to start out with 5 EV3 Core sets, 1 software site license, 1 EV3 expansion set and 5 laptops at the bargain basement price of $3709.85.  Any additional money raised will go towards operating expenses such as First LEGO League membership dues, competition entrance fees, spare parts, snacks, T-Shirts and if possible addtional kits.

Your donation will be "funneled" through Friends of Bonham for complete transparency.  Thank you for your support.
