Young Artists' Theatre Project
Our high school administration suddenly chose to cancel the spring production of Avenue Q: The Student Edition without discussion, saying it was "too controversial." Administrators announced their unilateral decision after the production was already in rehearsal.
The show, a satire of children's television, deals with issues of sexual orientation, racism & intolerance, and homelessness, among others.
Parents and students concerned about censorship of the performing arts in their school banded together to find a positive solution to a negative situation. The Young Artists' Theatre Project of Danville was born!
Created in collaboration with RiverStage Community Theatre, a well-respected organization with roots in the Susquehanna Valley that go back to 2003. RiverStage supports the performing arts and believes theatre can be a transformative experience for actors and audience members alike. We should not shy away from topics that may be deemed "controversial." Theatre can inform, educate, challenge, and entertain...and it should be permitted to thrive in every community.
The Young Artists' Theatre Project of Danville will produce Avenue Q: The Student Edition July 28-30, 2017. Go Fund Me contributions will go directly toward the cost of this production, budgeted for $15,000. Additional funds will be used to create an endowment to ensure the long-term viability of the Young Artists' Theatre Project. We will be able to provide opportunities every summer for the youth of the region to participate in live theatre either as actors, crew, or pit orchestra members.
