You Lead Change – Empower 50 Teens

For the last 6 years, Safe Streets has sent 50 student leaders from the Youth Leading Change program to Leadership Academy. We can’t do it alone anymore--this year, we need your help to lead change.
Each student’s Leadership Academy experience costs more than $300, so we need $15,000 to support scholarships for every leader. Every donation, no matter what amount, truly makes a difference.
Safe Streets began uniting neighbors against crime in 1989, and founded Youth Leading Change in 1996 to serve at-risk youth in Tacoma neighborhoods. Today, YLC gives local youth the tools and support they need to become leaders in their schools today and communities tomorrow.
Leadership Academy started in 2009, bringing student leaders from YLC chapters countywide together to improve leadership skills and make change in their school communities.
Safe Streets provides full scholarships to all Leadership Academy attendees. More than 80 percent of the students coming this year receive free or reduced lunch during the school year, and we believe finances at home should not limit a student’s leadership potential.
Our support comes at a cost--we rely on grants and private donations to sustain our organization, and we need help to maintain funding for our programs.
This is where you come in: Take charge and get connected with the 10 Challenge. Contact 10 friends, family members or co-workers in 10 days and ask them to donate $10 to the Leadership Academy #YouLeadChange campaign. Each tax-deductible donation will help provide underserved students from Tacoma and Pierce County high schools with scholarships covering meals, housing, leadership sessions and more for the week-long academy.
The mission of Leadership Academy is to inspire students from our seven YLC chapters to positively impact their schools and communities by providing them with the tools to become leaders. Leadership Academy focuses on leadership development and team-building to help youth increase confidence and competence in social-emotional skills.
Youth Leading Change student leaders and advocates are invited to the five-day, 40-hour intensive training that combines classroom instruction, physical challenges and team building activities. Through this program, students will understand important social principles like working together as a team to accomplish positive outcomes in school and community projects.
By donating to the #YouLeadChange campaign, you are supporting the student leaders who will take charge and make change in their communities. We want to be sure that all students have the chance to be part of experiences like the ones in the stories below!
Find a voice.
Leaders from Stadium High School were empowered to speak up about issues they identified on their campus. The group worked together to research and combat problems of destructive behavior like drug use and violence.
Overcome obstacles to make a difference.
After a year of intense bullying, Gracie felt that she didn’t have anything else to live for. When she found acceptance and friendship in Youth Leading Change, she learned her own self-worth and ability to positively change the lives of those around her.
Discover future potential.
One principle of the Leadership Academy is college readiness. Justin found a brighter future thanks to the support and encouragement of his YLC advisors and peers.
We know these opportunities are changing the live of Pierce County youth because they tell us so! According to a 2015 survey conducted by Pacific Lutheran University:● 95% of YLC students believe they can be effective leaders
● 79% of YLC students feel they are likely to participate in community service groups as an adult
● 95% of YLC students stated they are likely or extremely likely to attend college
