My name is Maya Washington and I’ve traveled to Nepal to work with the Organization, Care Women Nepal.
In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that have hit this country in recent months it is often forgotten that many communities within Nepal were already struggling and in need of critical support.
The District of Dhankuta is one of those communities. And the critical support needed is in the category of women’s health and the overwhelming number of women suffering from uterine prolapse. Uterine Prolapse is a horribly painful and debilitating condition in which the uterus can fall from the pelvis to the vagina; in some cases leaving the body completely. Unknown to the vast majority of the world thousands of women suffer from this condition, especially in the rural communities of Nepal.
On June 8th and 9th I had the opportunity to observe Care Women Nepal’s first health camp of the summer where they screened more that 500 women for uterine prolapse and recognized 35 in need of surgery.
I've been traveling through the villages of Dhankuta meeting these women, photographing them and recording their stories:
This is Sapana, a 25 year old woman living in the rural village of Teliya, Dhankuta Nepal. Sapana has suffered from Uterine Prolapse since her first miscarriage at age 19. Sapana continues to work in the fields, do hard labor and heavy lifting despite the pain she feels.
During my time here I’ve observed even the youngest of children carrying the heaviest of loads
One of the main causes of uterine prolapse, in addition to inadequate child birthing conditions is heavy lifting.
Care Women Nepal seeks to lift the heavy burden placed on these women by continuing to provide them with free screenings for uterine prolapse and providing surgeries to those who need it. The next health camp is being held July 19th & 20th. I would like to assist Care Women Nepal by raising $5,000. $3,500 will pay for the much-needed surgeries for these women and $1,500 will go toward the next health camps expenses.

$20 A $20 donation would pay for the transport cost of both a patient and a family member from a remote village to the Dhankuta District Hospital.
$30 A $30 donation would pay for food for both the patient and family member for the 4 days she will be required to stay in the hospital
$65 A $65 donation would pay for one patient’s much needed surgery
