David Swetman's Circle of Giving

Has David Swetman touched your life in a meaningful way?  Perhaps he crafted a custom wedding or personalized a funeral service for a loved one. Maybe he simply listened or found a way to make you laugh in a difficult moment. You might have benefitted from his mischief, his gentle teaching, his friendship or his ready ability to share space in joy, grief, and every emotion in between.

Now is the time for us to be there for David – to help support him and his beloved wife Bonnie as they navigate life in the shadow of ALS.

Last summer, David was told by doctors at the Stanford University Medical Center that the reason he was having difficulty swallowing and speaking clearly was ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As the disease progresses, David’s muscles atrophy and harden, making even the simplest tasks today, such as eating, swallowing and speaking, difficult or impossible. David’s ALS is particularly aggressive. While communication is still possible, his speech is gone.

When, in response to his physical limitations, David left his position as chaplain at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital on December 1, 2014, he simultaneously lost his income and his health coverage at a time when both are greatly needed.

Today, we can help our dear friend David.

A few notes on the need:

·         In early June, David lost his footing and fell down an 18 foot embankment on their property. He was airlifted to a trauma center and received staples in his head. Medicare paid for a large portion of the resulting bill, but Bonnie and David are responsible for $4,000.

·          David and Bonnie’s home needs immediate renovation to help make it accessible during the progress of his disease.  (They are seeking assistance from local organizations, and expect to be responsible for a portion of the costs).

·         David needs to purchase secondary medical insurance as additional medical costs not covered by Medicare are adding up.

If you feel so moved, please consider a donation in support of David’s care and comfort.

There are two ways to contribute:

·    Continue on here with GoFundMe if the convenience of on-line giving works best for you.
