Art is suffering in our capital-focused world. It's dropped from funding, laughed at as a career option, and discouraged as a serious pursuit. Unless there's some form of commercial appeal, art is overlooked. For those brave enough to pursue studies in the arts, the ending usually means a large amount of student loans and no real job prospects. Art is a side hustle; office jobs pay the bills.
We want to change that.
We believe that art knows no boundaries. It cannot be contained within a generation, a language, or a culture. It is one of the few truly permanent creations of humanity, a uniting force for all eternity.
Our mission is to promote artists by providing creative spaces, steady incomes, and community support for their work.
Margery de Brus will start with literature and grow from there. Our first eBook is coming out this month, and we're accepting short story submissions for our first anthology to be published in June 2019. Royalties from the publications will be used to fund artists, but in the meantime, we need your help!
Arguably, the most stunning art in history came from the Renaissance period. And those works were backed by wealth. The most notable patrons were the Medici's who sponsored artists like Michelangelo, da Vinci, and Botticelli. Granted, the conditions under which some of the artists worked were not ideal, and the model isn't without its flaws. But it's our starting point. A base to build upon.
Surprisingly, the trend of sponsoring art is growing again. Numerous articles have been published over the past two years regarding Angel Investors for artists. The idea is to treat artists like start-up companies by providing financial backing and security so the artists can grow and flourish.
In March of 2019, MdB plans to open its doors to "employment" applications for a limited number of writers. The writer-employees are not residents. They are not grant recipients. They will be paid a salary and given freedom to write on the topics of their choice. In the future, we will expand to include visual and musical artists as well. It's an ambitious goal that comes from a desire to see artists freed from the constraints of Corporate America so they can focus on their creative work.
How are we doing that? By fighting fire with fire. Margery de Brus is an LLC backed by private funding with the goal of promoting artists in a world that increasingly marginalizes art. We are the Medici's of the Renaissance, but we need help to get started! Please consider contributing today!
