Satellite Tagging Coastal Sharks

Donation protected
Just like in 1975, people are once again afraid to get in the water after news reports from North Carolina of shark attacks on kids playing in the surf.  We at Requiem believe, that even though shark attacks are rare, we can do more to decrease the likelihood through education and tracking these apex predators that patrol the coastline.

The Requiem Fishing team would like to start a non-profit organization specializing in catching sharks that frequent the surf and pose the greatest threat to public safety by placing a satellite GPS tracker on their dorsal fins.

In order to start this initiative, we need support. Our goal is to raise $6,000.   The tags will also allow the public to access a free website to monitor the sharks' location.  The cost of the tag is approximately $1700, but the company we are purchasing the tags from also charge a $100-per month fee during the tag's three-year battery life.  Therefore, each tag ultimately has about a $5300 price tag for each GPS tracker.  Additionally, Requiem Fishing would like to register and file for the non-profit organization status, which will cost about $400.  Any remaining funds will go towards the possibility of purchasing new tags and the required bait, tackle, and other gear.  All supporters will contribute to the naming of the shark we place the tag on.

The Requiem Fishing team will thoroughly document the catch, measuring and tagging, and release of the shark chosen for the satellite tag through video and pictures.  By doing so, we hope to strengthening our proposal for a Federal grant to fund the purchasing of additional tags.  By doing so, our dream is to one day build a network of monitored sharks, to understand their migratory patterns, and potentially develop an early alert system for when dangerous sharks enter heavily populated surf zones.

Requiem Fishing was founded in 2012 and comprises of 12 local land based shark fisherman located within Charleston, SC and Florida. We are a team that practices strict "catch-and-release" policy for all large species of fish located within 1000 yards of the beach. Requiem takes pride in helping to educate the public about sharks and is our mission to change the public perception of sharks and shark fisherman. In the three seasons of surf fishing, the Requiem Fishing team has landed over 148 sharks longer than 5-feet, 19 over 7.5-feet, and 4 over 10-feet including a 12-foot Tiger Shark. Of the 166 total sharks caught, nearly two-dozen are Bull and Tiger sharks, deemed by many to be included in the “Big 3” of dangerous sharks to humans.
