Hi, my name is James Sumners. I have started this campaign to help a friend, pictured above, who's good nature was exploited when he fell on hard times and needed help. His name is Andrew Shewmaker, he is a Desert Storm veteran, and he is afflicted by PTSD and Gulf War Syndrome (GWS).
Andrew was a machinist and a foreman at a factory in Pennsylvania. But as the symptoms of his GWS progressed, he was unable to continue these duties. He was able to get by for some time, but last December his funds ran out. Unable to receive assistance through various charities in time to avoid being evicted, he had to pack up all of his possessions, leave them with a "friend," and carry what he could on his back to move in with his father in Missouri.
Andrew's "friend" claimed, sold, or trashed all of the possessions Andrew left with him pretty much as soon as Andrew got on a bus to cross the country. His fond photographs, personal journals, clothes, electronics, and even his dog were absconded with or discarded. Sadly, Andrew trusted this so called friend of almost 10 years, who never gave him a reason not to, and didn't contract the storage with him. So the police see it as Andrew gave everything to the thief.
Andrew is unable to do much more than cover his basic necessities and an Internet connection to remain in touch with the world. I want to help him recover one of his lost items, something that connected him to a community of people who's company helped him deal with, or at least forget for a while, his ailments -- a Microsoft Xbox One.
As much as I would like to be able to, I can't do it on my own. Will you help me return a little goodness to Andrew's life?
The goal of this fund is to at least buy an Xbox One for Andrew. That's $350 U.S. But if we can raise enough, I'd like to get him more. So, if we can do it, the following items will be purchased and sent to Andrew in addition to the console:
$150 U.S. -- An Xbox One "Elite" controller. Because of his GWS, the tendons in Andrew's thumbs have softened. This limits the dexterity of his thumbs. This controller adds paddles that would let Andrew use the rest of his fingers in place of his right thumb. Subtotal: $500 U.S.
$60 U.S. -- Forza Motorsport 6 (game). One of Andrew's favorite game series is the Forza Motorsport series. Subtotal: $560 U.S.
Again, the true goal is merely a console for Andrew. If we don't meet it, any funds gathered will be sent directly to Andrew to help him in whatever way he sees fit.
