Yoga for St. Louis Veterans

Donation protected
Local 501(c)(3) non-profit Yoga Buzz is raising funds to establish a yoga program for Veterans through the VA St. Louis Health Care System.  One-hundred percent of funds raised in this campaign will go directly towards this mission.

This newly created yoga program for the V.A. St. Louis Health Care System will focus on specific needs within the veteran community, ranging from trauma-sensitive yoga for managing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to chair yoga for those wheelchair bound or unable to get up and down off the floor. These classes will be available for free at both the Jefferson Barracks location as well as John Cochran on Grand.  Projected launch date is Winter 2015.

In addition to this GoFundMe campaign, Yoga Buzz is hosting an hour long, all-levels yoga class followed by a Yoga Expo in the Midway at Union Station on Thursday, September 24 at 7pm. One hundred percent of ticket sales from the Heart’s Center Celebration will go to support this program.  If you would like to learn more about the Heart's Center Celebration at Union Station, please visit www.yogabuzz.org/celebration.

Since July of 2014, Yoga Buzz has hosted over 70 pop-up yoga classes at a variety of unexpected locations throughout St. Louis, including City Museum, Busch Stadium, Peabody Opera House, St. Louis Science Center, as well as at a number of local breweries and restaurants.

Alongside preparations for the Veteran yoga program, Yoga Buzz is also developing Trauma-Informed Yoga Training programs for yoga teachers, health professionals and social workers. This program will focus on trauma-awareness and how yoga can be a part of recovery and healing. The establishment of this foundation will not only benefit yoga for Veterans, but for offering yoga and mindfulness-based practices for many other underserved populations within the St. Louis area.

Yoga has gained momentum in the traditional medical community as a healing tool to support overall wellness. Studies have shown yoga to help to manage depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, low back pain and heart health.
