I created HalifaxTrails.ca in 2009 as I explored some of our local hiking trails but didn’t find any information available online. Maps, photos, videos and detailed information before heading out, is what I wished was available, so I decided to create it myself. Through the years I’ve documented most of my trips in hopes of attracting more people into these amazing natural resources which make Halifax and Nova Scotia so beautiful and unique. It’s my view that the more people I can get out enjoying these places, the more aware we become of how fragile, threatened and under-funded they are. As these places become more popular, their preservation will hopefully become more important to those in positions of authority.
Born and raised in Halifax, I’ve always had great memories of bike rides at Point Pleasant Park, beach combing at McNabs Island, and acting out epic childhood adventures at York Redoubt. Being outdoors was a big part of my childhood and I’d love to help other local children have the same great memories and appreciation for nature that my outdoor adventures instilled in me.
I have put a lot of time and effort into the site through the years, and have learned many valuable lessons and skills along the way. It has been a joy to share my work with the public, free of charge. The ad revenue I make on the site is barely enough to cover the web hosting costs, and certainly doesn't come close to paying for any other related expenses.
I'd love to keep adding to the site and improving its quality, but with that comes a lot of expenses (software, hardware, cameras, outdoor gear, transportation and lots of time and effort for one person). Any donations here will go towards adding to and improving the site, and most importantly; keeping it free for everyone.
