Only 15% of low-income and minority students write proficiently by 8th grade. As a result, only 8% of poor students will matriculate to college as compared to 80% of their more affluent peers.
College Writing Buddies works to change this. By physically and virtually connecting low-income public schools and university students, College Writing Buddies delivers individual writing support to the students who need it most . Using Google Drive, college buddies work with teachers to deliver virtual, differentiated feedback to students on all writing projects. Even from a dorm room, a college volunteer can give a student the support they need to make it to and through college!
With 35 brave Tulane freshman, we launched this January to provide Writing Buddies to over 100 sixth grade students in New Orleans. By the end of the year, we hope to expand to over 400 students, 100 college volunteers, and two universities. To make this possible, we need to raise $1,500 to cover the costs of marketing and recruitment. Please help us make it possible for every student to get a College Writing Buddy!
