Workshop for Habib & Carla

Habib and Carla need your help. This husband and wife team left their war-torn home of Aleppo, Syria and are trying to make a new life in Latvia where they have been granted asylum. We are raising money to help them purchase a jewelry-making workshop in order to provide for their family and continue to share their love of jewelry making with others.
Their Story: Habib and Carla’s story begins in Aleppo, Syria, where Habib started his career in jewelry making at a young age. After his father died, his older brother took on the responsibility of training Habib as a goldsmith in the family’s studio in Aleppo’s once prosperous city center. Habib learned and excelled in the craft quickly.
Habib left his family’s business and started a new business with his beautiful wife, Carla, making gold rings. Habib made the rings using wax molds and Carla, a master of setting cubic zirconia and other gems, would apply the finishing touches. During this time, their family of two became a family of four with the addition of their children Eli and Odette. As unrest grew in Syria, life began to disintegrate in Aleppo. Soon Habib and Carla were without work and forced to make the difficult decision of leaving their home and business.
Making a long and arduous journey through Turkey, Russia and Belarus, they finally arrived in Latvia where they were granted asylum. With the help of friends, they have been able to open a small jewelry business this year and have learned skills tailored to the Latvian market. Successfully adapting to the Latvian and Western European style, they have become skilled at working with Baltic amber and silver, and have designed a whole new line of pendants and bracelets, which they sell alongside their more Middle Eastern inspired silver rings.
Establishing a new business in a foreign country hasn’t been easy, but Habib and Carla have been determined to make it work. Starting with an online business, they teamed up with a local Latvian jeweler who graciously provided them with a space in his own small workshop. Unfortunately, this benevolent jeweler now needs to sell his workshop in order to retire and is offering to sell his space to Habib and Carla. The money raised from this campaign will allow Habib and Carla to buy the workshop, which will provide them with a physical space to grow their business from.
Our Story: We are a group of friends from the U.S. and Latvia, who have been helping Habib and Carla in their efforts to launch their small business. We believe that greater things can be accomplished when we work together and combine our knowledge and skills. We are committed to helping Habib and Carla build their business, so that they can make a more stable future for themselves.
