WMU Mud Volleyball Tournament

I am a Lee Honors College student from Western Michigan University looking to raise money to support my thesis project. Part of being in the honors college is creating a thesis before you graduate. For my thesis I chose to do something that was a little unorthodox and create an event instead of writing a paper. Morgan Deboer and I decided to team up and work on the event together.  An unusual thesis needs an unusual event and as such we decided to plan and execute Western Michigan University's first Mud Volleyball Tournament.

A Mud Volleyball Tournament was chosen as a way to raise money for The Water Project, because it will be an entertaining and unique way for the students at Western Michigan University and the surrounding community members to get involved with each other while helping a great cause.

Mud volleyball tournaments have become increasingly popular over the past few years. Like a traditional volleyball game there are a number of teams, six players each, competing in a bracket style tournament. The difference between the two is the added element of water. The ground for the court is rototilled and thoroughly hosed down during the days leading up to the event to make thick mud, which allows for a difficult but comical game of volleyball.

We chose to organize a mud volleyball tournament instead of a traditional volleyball tournament because we believe "getting dirty to get clean" will be an exciting way to raise money for The Water Project. And who doesn't like getting a little dirty every now and then?
