Queen City Bee Co. (QCBC) is a young, developing company focused on safe, natural, sustainable and efficient methods of honeybee rearing. With over 32 years of beekeeping experience in both Europe and the USA, our philosophy at QCBC is to improve honeybee habitat conditions to allow honeybee colonies to more efficiently use their “workforce” to grow faster, stronger, healthier and more productive.
When we are not tending to the needs of our colonies, QCBC focuses its time and energy on innovation to develop new solutions to old problems. Today, more than ever, the future of the honeybee is up in the air. With the uncertainty of colony collapse disorder (CCD), climate change, and the persistence of a variety of pests, we feel that innovation is a must to assist our striped friends into the future.
The Beehive Insulated Winter Jacket is the latest innovation coming down the chute at QCBC. It features 4 mm corrugated plastic providing thermal and wind protection. This method minimizes heat loss through convection and acts as a windbreaker against cold winter gusts. 
The Winter Jacket is designed to fit a standard Langstroth hive (two deep hive bodies and a super).
Included are two burlap bags filled with cedar wood shavings and a fridge and freezer sized box of baking soda to be placed on top of the inner cover with the super. This provides thermal insulation while absorbing excess moisture. This configuration saves the bees' energy (by conserving body heat) over the winter and keeps them moisture free. Also, cedar shavings are a known wax moth repellent.
Proceeds from this project will fund the purchase of specialized tools for cutting and drilling plastics, the purchasing of bulk materials, shipping and handling, and labor for the production of the Winter Jackets.
