WiFi Safety for Kids

Our campaign:

The Parents Across America for Safe Technology  (PAAST) project grew out of a collaboration between PAA members and educators, medical practitioners. scientists, and other experts. Parents Across America (PAA) is an all volunteer, grassroots nonprofit organization. This campaign is spearheaded by independent members of the Parents Across America Oregon chapter.

Our campaign focuses on Save the Babies, Save the Kids, Save the Girls, and Save the Boys.  Watch as one parent to another explains why addressing this issue is so important.

 What the funds are for:

PAAST  is supporting three bills in the Oregon state legislature.  SB 281 requires warning labels on wireless products.  SB 282 requires screen time limits on the use of wireless devices in classrooms. SB 283 requires schools to replace dangerous microwave routers with safe, hard wired internet connections. The funding for this project will be used to:  inform educators, parents, and students of relevant scientific research; train parent volunteers; create, print and distribute materials; organize workshops and events; and pay for the expense of having expert witnesses speak to legislators and school boards.

We are working to pass legislation to protect kids. The increase of childhood cancer, auto-immune diseases,  eye ailments, headaches, ADHD, addiction, and behavioral problems at school demands that we act. Microwave emitting wireless devices including  routers, laptops, tablets, smart boards, and cordless and cell phones were never pre-market safety tested for use in schools. Another little known fact -- insurance companies will not insure schools for health problems resulting from wifi radiation exposure.

Funding this project is so important for the safety and welfare of our children . Our actions were inspired by the work of those who have introduced legislation in California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Michigan. We hope that our effort here in Oregon will build on their work. We expect resistance from the tech lobby and related well-funded industries and donors.

The 2019 session of the Oregon state legislature begins January 15th. Our bills receive a first reading shortly after that  and then advance through the process of becoming law. We have a short timeline to educate people and build support. The regular session ends in June.

If we are fortunate enough to meet our goal and more, the extra funding will be used to further the work in more  states. We feel this project is so important that it must continue.  Kids everywhere deserve our protection.

Pregnant women must be informed about the risks to their unborn babies from radiation-emitting wireless devices. Watch a short video at the BabySafe Project .

As kids are required to spend more time on screen devices in public schools reporting an increase in eye problems, memory deficits, and behavioral problems, Silicon Valley  parents  curb usage for their children. .

Who we are:

My name is Deb Mayer and I, like many of you, use my cell phone a lot  – or did until I became aware of addiction and other health risks associated with it. Now I feel duty-bound to share the evidence about those health risks and how to use devices safely.  I've been the chair of Parents Across America Oregon  (PAAO) for three years, and a national board member of Parents Across America (PAA) for many more years.  At PAA, we champion strong, quality public schools that provide safe, equitable learning environments and opportunities to learn. Recently we started to work on a Wifi Safety for Kids project.

Deb shares safety concerns about cell phones and tablets for kids with comedian  Paula Poundstone who has been outspoken on the topic of screen addiction.

Our story:

Earlier this year Deb met a father who for the past thirteen years has been working to have cell towers removed from schools.  For the safety of our children, he says,  computers should be hard-wired in classrooms to eliminate the harmful effects of wifi radiation. It all began when the private school  his daughter attended installed a cell tower in the middle of the playground without notifying parents. His inquiries led him to  enroll her in a public school. The public schools installed cell towers, too. Today, not a single Portland Public School offers a wifi-free education.  The same is true of many school districts in Oregon.  Currently he works with groups like We Are the Evidence to help parents of children with microwave sickness  and drafts legislation for wifi-free schools. PAAO has since taken up the fight to limit screen time in classrooms and to educate parents about health concerns associated with wireless digital devices.

Also, in April of 2018,  the Children's Screen Time Action Network, a project of Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood (CCFC), held its first conference in Boston. Gathered there were hundreds of concerned educators, medical practitioners, scientists, and others collaborating to find ways to curb the use of wifi and wireless devices. PAA is happy to be woking with members of that coalition on this project. We are not against the use of computer technology. We are for the safe, sensible, and responsible  use of computer technology.

How you can help:

Please consider donating to this campaign, and sharing it with your co-workers, friends, and family on Facebook, email, Twitter, and text message. Each share makes a real difference! Thank you!

Take a moment to look over our legislation. You can find the bills at Parents Across America Oregon .  Consider using them as a template for drafting legislation for your own state.  Contact us. We'll be happy to help!
