After work on April 18th, I suddenly felt a severe stabbing pain from the left side of my abdomen. It continued to escalate, forcing me to seek medical treatment at the ER. After running a CAT scan, we found that I had a hernia in one of my abdominal muscles, and it looked like part of my intestines was caught in the tear. Strangling and/or rupturing of the intestines is incredibly deadly, and the CAT scan showed that I was in danger of having it happen at any time. Given the danger, the surgeon wanted to operate as soon as possible, and the surgery was scheduled for early April 28th.
The Friday before the operation, I got a call from the hospital about my financial obligations. Unfortunately, at this time in my life, I cannot afford insurance and there is no state or federal aid that I qualify for. Through negotiating with the hospital, I was able to get both my ER visit and my surgery covered for $4,000. However, in order to accomplish this, I had to take out a Care Credit account which would pay it in full ahead of time. This was with the understanding that more expenses would come with any complications, which thankfully there were not.
Care Credit only covered the hospital bill, however. There is still the matter of physicians' fees, and other medical bills relating to my surgery. The following is a breakdown of how much I owe, combined with who I owe it to.
$4,000-Care Credit
$2,227-Surgeon
$1,742-ER Staff
$1,260-Anesthesiologist
