New K9 for Bremen Police Department

In 2011, the Bremen Police Department began the process to reestablish their K9 program. Fundraising was started to offset the initial startup costs of $30,000. Starting from scratch, approximately $15,000 was needed in equipment to outfit an extra patrol vehicle. This included lights, sirens, computer, radio, radar, and other items. The cost of a dual purpose K9, and five weeks of training at this time was also $15,000.
The Bremen Police Department turned to world renowned Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. There, they purchased K9 Quido. K9 Quido was born May of 2008 in the country of Holland. Training began immediately and continued after being purchased by Vohne Liche Kennels. K9 Quido is known as a dual purpose K9. He is trained for apprehension, tracking, and narcotics detection.
K9 Quido's handler is Sgt. Trent Stouder. Sgt. Trent Stouder is a thirteen year veteran of the Bremen Police Department. After purchasing K9 Quido, Sgt. Stouder spent five weeks at Vohne Liche Kennels training with other handlers, basically learning how to work with their K9 partners, and learning what the K9 had already been trained to do. They are also required to complete sixteen hours of additional training each and every month.
During the three and a half years that they have been partners, K9 Quido has been involved in nearly one hundred narcotic arrests. He has also been involved in searching and tracking missing persons, and fleeing fugitives.
As K9 Quido has turned seven years old, he is on the downhill side of his service with he Bremen Police Department. Even though there is no set age to retire a K9, you must prepare for the overall health and ability to do the job to begin decreasing.
With the yearly costs to care for K9 Quido, and the approximate $15,000 for a new department K9, the Bremen Police Department is looking ahead to plan for this expense.
