Speaks Alone in the Fringe

Donation protected

"Monologue: a part of a drama in which a single actor speaks alone; soliloquy." Speaks Alone explores the challenge of the monologue. Twenty female voices, twenty stories from across the genres and history of theatre, told through one actor.

Speaks Alone will be performed as part of The Atlantic Fringe Festival in Halifax, NS from August 30th to September 9th. Exact dates, times and location TBA

About the Show

"Speaks Alone" started as a challenge for myself. I wanted something to keep me working, learning, and challenged when I wasn't either engaged in another show or taking a class. I find that's something that theatre artists struggle with, especially us young ones, constantly working on and improving their skills. Dancers go to dance class and musicians pick up their instruments on a daily basis. But actors don't always seem to have the same integration of life and "work". But why not? Why not learn a monologue a day? Perform a scene a week? And that's why this project was born. Why not learn 20 monologues?

Already "Speaks Alone" has become a valuable learning experience in the art of the monologue. But as I move forward, the project is constantly evolving and taking on a life of its own. In the end I think you will find it's a lot about women and their stories. Twenty women who's stories I have chosen to tell. Some of them you may know and others may be new to you but there will always be someone or something you see in yourself.

Who is Emily?

Emily Jewer is me! I am a theatre and visual artist in Halifax NS. I was born in Vancouver, grew up in Toronto, went to school in New Brunswick and now have planted myself in Nova Scotia after slowly making my way across the country. I have my BFA from Mount Allison University in photography and also attended and graduated from Neptune Theatre's Pre-Professional Training Program.

Where is my money going?

Theatre is great but it costs money. Luckily we have wonderful festivals, like the Atlantic Fringe, which make the cost a little easier to bear, but in the end everything still has a price.

The money raised here will go toward the show's costs. Things like our Fringe fee, props, costumes, set, publicity and hopefully (if the stars align!) paying the lovely people at the heart of the show who made it happen.

"But, Emily!" you say "I'm a theatre/visual/musical/etc artist too and I don't have any money!" That's okay!  You can help me out by sharing this campaign with your family and friends! The more people who know the better!

Well that's all for now folks! I will try to keep you updated on my progress! Watch here for news and thanks for your support!
