Although Melissa was taken from us much too early in her life, she would not have survived as long as she did without the help she received from Sister Island Project. When I went on my SIP trip to Cruz Verde back in March, it changed my life forever. Being with this amazing community for Melissa's burial really made me realize how much joy it would bring Melissa to see her death making a positive impact in the lives of the people who loved her the most; the people of Cruz Verde.
The donations made to this gofundme will be given directly to Sister Island Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to cultural exchange and the support of the Cruz Verde community. That being said, you will automatically receive a tax-deductable receipt upon donating to this fund. Please visit the SIP website (www.sisterislandproject.org) for more information about how they are making an impact through the development of the Luz Maria Learning Center, medical and scholarship funds, and other community assistance programs. This organization helped afford Melissa the medical care she had been receiving over the years as well as enabled numerous volunteers, like myself, to have the oppurtunity to meet such a precious little girl. We are already working to plan an SIP trip to Cruz Verde, where you could even join us and see exactly how your donation is making a difference.
I have set the fundraising goal at $30,000 as that was the original goal of the VivaMelissa campaign but in reality the goal is to raise as much money as possible for this cause to honor Melissa's remarkable presence on this earth.
Each and every donation, big or small, will go toward making a difference in Melissa's community and I know this will bring her more joy than anything else in this world. I ask you all from the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of Melissa's heart as well, to please donate to this fund to show her community just how much love we all had for Melissa.
I was the very happiest I have ever been when I was with Melissa and I can only hope to be able to bring some of that happiness back to Cruz Verde in Melissa's honor. I am a 20-year-old college student with thousands in student loan debt and I wish more than anything I was in a position to give more to this community than I can. That is why I am humbly appealing to everyone that can to please donate to this fund. Whether it be for me, for Melissa or for any other child that left this earth before their time. Thank you so much!
