On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, Carrie Beth Johnson was involved in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two of her dear friends and companions, Frank Barham, and Margret Kargbo. Carrie was also severely injured during the accident.
At the time of the accident Carrie was volunteering her time for the "Wheel 2 Live" campaign. She was driving the assistance van, accompanied by Margret. They were following and documenting the journey of Frank Barham, an Atlanta-based musician and activist, who was traveling from Atlanta to Savannah by wheelchair. It was Frank's mission to raise money to buy wheelchairs for deserving individuals in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Around 4:00 pm Carrie and Margret were trailing Frank in the assistance van when an 18-wheeler traveling southbound on Hwy 21 rear-ended the van causing a catastrophic accident. Frank Barham and Margret Kargbo, Carrie’s friend and passenger, were both killed.
Carrie managed to crawl out of the van just before it was completely engulfed in flames. She was airlifted to Georgia Regions in Augusta, Georgia, and then later transferred to one of the best burn units in the southeast, “Doctors Hospital” in Augusta, Georgia.
She has third-degree burns over 40% of her body. She will be in the hospital for several months receiving treatment and surgeries. Her husband, Seth, and mother, Sandy, are in Augusta to be near her during this time. They are three hours from their home in Villa Rica, Georgia. The travel and living expenses are growing along with the mounting medical bills. Any amount you are able to contribute to this wonderful woman will be greatly appreciated. Carrie is truly a beautiful person both inside and out. She has a very long road of recovery and the support of her family and friends is needed now more than ever.
