UPDATE FROM ELIZABETH of Chania Helps Refugees
23/3/2016
"I am in Eidomeni for 6 days setting up a mother and baby tent at one of the makeshift camps . it has 2000 people , families. There are camps being set up by the government everywhere... I heard of one today in an old slaughter house... 800 people....
What has moved me most (apart from what I have seen so far at this camp and at Eidomeni) is the attitude of the local inhabitants who, while suffering so much with the economic crisis, are helping in whatever way they can...saying that their grandparents were Refugees in 1922..
Today I went to a baby shop to buy large a plastic baby bath for toddlers...when they heard why I wanted them they donated two more, two baby relaxers and other things. This unasked for generosity moved me to tears!!
Today it's raining so no baths for the babies...but in a day two yes!!
Please share this...and donate if you can. The refugees now need basic equipment...like large bowls so they can wash their clothes, washing line, pegs..and saucepans, kettles to heat water ...
Photos when I have time... "

We are currently appealing for donations to be channeled to Elizabeth in Eidomeni & Athens. After Eidomeni, Elizabeth, plus two more Chania volunteers, will be going to Athens for a week in April. Your donations are going directly to help needs on the ground, buying goods and supplies as they are needed,

Who Are we?
I am a volunteer with a small group «Chania Helps Refugees», started last October here in Crete, Greece where we live. I have just returned from Lesvos island and want to help raise some funds for the Chania Helps Refugees for the ongoing needs of refugees, having seen first hand how much donations can help.

We are a small group of volunteers and supporters who live in Crete, Greece, some of whom went to Lesvos in November 2015 and February 2016 to volunteer.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?

- Collected, sorted and sent a truckload and a few car loads of boxes of clothes to grassroots organisations.

- We have been twice to Lesvos and worked as volunteers in one of the beach camps on the north coast (Sikamenia) where many refugee boats land. We have sorted Lesvos warehouse donations and personally delivered food, baby supplies, clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, tents, medical supplies and more across Lesvos island from warehouses to camps.

-Elizabeth (founder, with her daughter Nina) has been busy volunteering from home co-ordinating Marha Cars as well helping sort clothes in UK while there.

-Done a couple of talks in Crete to raise awareness on the refugee situation.

-Raised over £1,300 and 1,000 Euros, most of which was spent on goods/food/medication locally in Lesvos, donating to local grassroots organisations and subsidising our trips.

- We used some of the donation money to shop in charity shops in UK and donated clothes to Calais .

WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW?

Fundraising to help in Eidomeni and Athens.

Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated.

A big heartfelt thank you from us for any help you can give and please share so that we can reach more people!
