Medical Need Beyond My Resources

Donation protected
I need help. I don’t know how to do this. I’ve always been a helper not one in need of help but my health has dramatically changed the circumstances of my life and I’ve come to you for temp assistance.

I’ve spent 10 years as a volunteer on the Buffalo Free-net as an information provider (The WNY Disabilities Forum, Holiday Homepages), Working with teachers and other information providers and with the elderly; then doing technical and administrative work, and becoming a member of the Board of Directors.

I have a love of animals especially the entire cat family for which I supplied some accessories like litter and food to shelters and also some dollars for medical support. That was when I was making money.

Since then I have been overwhelmed with illness and staying alive. I can’t give you an exact number but I’ve been hospitalized 15+ times with heart failure, acute kidney failure, and COPD. Most recently I found out that I tested positive for Lynch Syndrome a genetic defect that causes massively large chance of getting cancer. 80% for colorectal cancer, for example. Other areas affected in men include brain, pancreas, bladder, stomach, upper or small intestine, liver, and skin. There are more specific to women such as ovarian cancer. These have lower probabilities than colorectal cancer but they are just as deadly not dealt with.

In my case I am too sick to have surgery, radiation or chemotherapies. Therefore I must undergo careful screening on and advanced schedule to catch and polyps or small tumors early which can be removed endoscopicaly.

I’m also in a wheelchair because my heart can’t support me walking or even standing. I have had 1 cancer incident in April 2015 in the form of a massively cancerous polyp.  Biopsy and Barium Cat scan showed no residual traces of cancer but I am undergoing 6 month follow-ups.

FINANCIAL NEEDS ITEMIZED

1) My insurance co. changed the rules and I now need $500/qrt. Total: $2000 to keep my insulin pump.

2) Monthly food including meat and vegetable protein (a diabetic staple) and fresh vegetables for salads (part of weight loss program for both heart and diabetes and low-salt diet. Canned veggies are full of salt.) $200/month for 6 months

3) Pharmacy not covered by insurance: $93/month including vitamins and special vitamins for my anemia.

4) Eyeglasses: $150 toward cheap eyeglasses with glass lens. For those not in the know the $69 glasses have plastic lens that become scratched like a chicken’s pen. Then need replacement frequently. Upgrading to glass lens can last for decades as the lens I have now from the 1980’s.

5) $500/month towards my mortgage. I will be moving to a reduced cost senior/disabled single bedroom apt in Jan. There’s a waiting list.  In the meantime I must keep up my $800 mortgage on my small house.

6) I need about $600 for wheelchair van service to get to and from Roswell Park Cancer Institute for various tests to keep me alive. That’s based on my next 4 appointments. There could very well be more visits.

I estimate $9,000 to $10,000 to make it through this year. By then I will have SSD or Welfare till that comes through, disabled person’s housing, and hopefully will still be alive.

Thank you to those who are able to donate financially, and to those who send prayers, good vibes or good will.

Ironically you can do everything right to maintain good health and then genetics hit you with a bad heart from my mother’s side and a bad cancer restriction gene on my father’s side.

Take care and be prepared, my friends.
