Eli's USA Archery Team Tryouts

Donation protected
My name is John Winker and I started this funding project for one of my Archery students who is a member of the JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Developement) program I run in Raleigh, NC.

Eli Hughes is a 9th grader from Haw River, NC with hopes of trying out for and making the USA Archery Compound Team and representing the USA at the World Outdoor Youth Championships.  Tryouts for this team involve a lot of travel expenses and registration fees which we hope to offset by asking everyone he intends to represent for just a little help.

Eli discovered archery when he was 5 years old when he received a child’s compound bow for Christmas. After bow fishing with his uncle, he upgraded to a Bowtech compound hunting bow which he later upgraded to stronger limbs as he grew. After not shooting much for a couple of years, he picked up his bow again in the summer of 2014 as an agreement with his parents to work at something constructive for 100 hours in order to get his own cell phone. Soon after, he discovered target archery through the JOAD club at Wolf Ridge Archery in Efland, NC. Before long Coach Eaton recommended getting coaching specific to shooting compound bows from John Winker at the Raleigh Revolution (the JOAD club in Raleigh, NC) which meets at NC Hunters Supply. Eli still enjoys occasionally shooting barebow for fun with his Dad and younger sister Laura. The Bowtech has been retired to a hunting bow and he is enjoying shooting a newly acquired Hoyt compound target bow. Now a passion for archery and hopes of doing well at the next tournament are the incentive to practice archery and he has to be reminded to stop. Eli says that he could not have reached the level he’s at without good coaching and hopes to continue learning and improving under coach Winker.

He attends the Classical Conversations home school group in Burlington where he was a member of the mock trial team. His favorite subjects are math and history. He is active in his youth group at Glen Hope Baptist Church where he volunteers with the children’s classes. He also volunteers at the Mebane VFW. He is a member of Boy Scouts of America, troop 47 in Mebane, where he is working toward achieving Eagle Scout rank and participates in the Order of the Arrow.

Eli’s hobbies include deer hunting, basket weaving, fly fishing and taking his dog Lucy swimming in the Haw River. He enjoys spending time with his parents and sister which includes a lot of vacations to TN. He enjoys helping his grandparents on their farm in TN during hay season each year.
