Un-Koch MSU FOIA Request
Charles and David Koch are billionares who want to expand their corporate influence in higher education. Michigan State University is a part of this web of influene. MSU Students United has joined a national movement, called "Un Koch My Campus" to learn more about the Koch brothers' influence at MSU. On November 3rd, 2014 we submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to Michigan State University about information regarding the $69,730 that MSU has received from the Koch brothers since 2005.
About three weeks later we received a response: the information we asked for would require "excessive labor" and would "incur fees likely to exceed $390".
We submitted an initial payment of $195, but because "freedom of information" isn't really free, we need to raise another $100 to pay off the costs.
Charles Koch, in 1974, was very clear about his plan to influence the university, saying “We should… [support] only those programs, departments or schools that contribute in some way to our individual companies or to the general welfare of our free enterprise system.” Such flagrant disrespect for the university in an attempt to use the University system to benefit the profits of Koch Industries should not be tolerated anywhere, and especially not at MSU.
